Von Heinrich Holzschuher wurde es 1829 zu einem reinen Weihnachtslied umgedichtet. Die Melodie wurde von einer sizilianischen Volksweise abgeleitet, welche Falk bei einer weihnachtlichen Chorprobe aufschnappte.
It is one of Germany’s most famous Christmas carols. The original text was written by John David Falk of 1816. From Heinrich Holzschuher it was rewritten in 1829 to a mere Christmas carol. The melody was derived from a Sicilian folk tune, which Falk overheard at a Christmas choir practice.
