This is a deeply unsettling poem by Hardy, which anticipates some of the themes which would shortly become prominent in the war poetry of Owen and others during the Great War. The ’quaint’ and ’curious’ circumstances of war lead the speaker to shoot dead an enemy, and leave him asking himself why.
