Tuba part from Heldenmusik Heroic Marches 7-12

12 Heroic Marches

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) Arr. Peter Baljeu
13 minutes
Classical music

This is the second set of 6 marches arranged for Brass Quintet (the first 6 are in Heldenmusik Book 1- see the Related Scores above). The 12 Marches gives a musical picture of what heroic music sounds like: Vigilance, Generosity, Happiness, and so on. Telemann wrote these pieces especially for his oboeist friend and so the music was originally written for solo instrument plus figured bass. As was the practice in the early 1700’s, only a melody line, a bass line and a number was given, so that the keyboardist could improvise as appropriate (according to well established rules). The pieces in this collection have been performed by many groups and kinds of instruments. My first introduction to the music was on a recording of Trumpet, percussion and organ with E. Power Biggs playing the organ. It was truely glorious music, and I hope that the arrangements here also portray in the brass quintet what Telemann had in mind.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
