Johann Christian Bach (1735 – 1782) (often known as the “English” Bach) was the eighteenth child and eleventh son of Johann Sebastian Bach. After a period as organist at Milan Cathedral he settled in London as an opera and concert director and as music master to the family of George III. These sonatas were first published in 1776 as six sonatas for the harpsichord or piano forte with an accompaniment for a german flute or violin.

In this edition the ornamentation, articulation and dynamic markings are taken from the source. In a few places editorial accidentals have been added in brackets. In some instances pages have been left deliberately blank in the flute part to avoid awkward page turns.
