original for military band, in Ab. A friend of Richard Wagner, Kistler spent much of his career in Bad Kissingen, where he founded and ran a music school. He dedicated this march to Helmuth von Moltke shortly after Moltke was named a count ("Graf") in Prussia. Moltke was a military leader and historian, Chief of Staff of the Prussian army for 30 years (starting at age 57!). He is now known as Moltke the Elder to avoid confusion with his nephew ("the younger") who headed the German military at the start of WWI. Moltke has the unique distintion of having the earliest birth date (1800) of anyone for whom a voice recording is available, having recorded on a new-fangled Edison cylinder in 1889.
