Someone questioned me as to the advisability of including a funeral march in a clarinet concerto, but if the most famous funeral march of all occurs in a piano sonata, I suppose I can get away with it. I was trying to emulate the great dolorous Italian melodies such as "Casta diva" or "Una furtiva lagrima."

As is shown on the score, this depicts a procession of the Red Shirt veterans marching in honor of Giuseppe Garabaldi, who died on 2 June, 1882. Such a procession may or may not have happened in Milan, because Garabaldi was exiled to the isle of Caprera where he is buried.
