The present selection, from Cecil Sharp’s Morris Dance Tunes (with Herbert McIlwaine and George Butterworth [London: Novello, 1909-11]), contains 4 melodies from the vast number collected from traditional sources by Sharp and his collaborators: (1) the old favourite, Shepherds’ Hey; (2) an old favourite in a new guise, the Bacca Pipes Jig (i.e., Greensleeves); (3) Constant Billy; (4) The Flowers of Edinburgh. Sharp offers danceable piano arrangements with instructions for performance; my arrangements are simply that, cutting down on repetition so that players and audience don’t get too bored. The tunes were gathered by Sharp et al., the under-parts are mine. Played with spirit, they are great fun.
