Similarly to some of my other vocal compositions, "Schlustück" (1998) has been composed with resource to two, the very short Rainer Maria Rilke's poems "Schlustück" (1900/01) from the anthology "Das Buch der Bilder" (1902), and "O Herr" (1903) from the anthology "Das Stunden-Buch. Drittes Buch" (1905). The texts of the poems are slightly intermingled - the assertion being that music, compared to the text it employs, plays a more significant, unifying role. Sketches to the composition have been written for a female voice with a broad range accompanied by a trombone and double-bass. The harmonic succession sustaining the melodic line is conducted by a string quartet and vibraphone. In the process of composition, the set of instruments has been supplemented by a greater number of percussion and their significance has increased.
