General Notes (not for publication)
Quiet Gardens
First movement based on the "Poet as Gardener" music from my song cycle "Pictures in an Exhibition" which includes the unusually named "Dance of the Worm"
The second movement is based on the Hunt Scene from my opera "Melangell"
The whole piece’s duration is about 18 minutes
It was at Arley near Kidderminster by the river Severn that some friends performed my first string quartet.
The hall was set next to some beautiful old walled gardens, one of those peaceful havens to sit in and relax staring at ancient brick walls with things growing up them. It was a place associated then with the international "Quiet Gardens" scheme.
Perversely this gave me the idea for the first movement of this piece which explores a very subdued soundworld and is subtitled "quiet gardens". To contrast this the second movement evokes gardens by night with various raised pulse rates and scary things, creepy crawlies and predators (well cats anyway) out hunting.
The irony of writing music for a quiet garden did not pass me by. In my earlier days there were so few places for quiet contemplation. There was always a transistor radio or two, or ball games. But as you will have observed, the quieter it gets the more you can hear, even your own heartbeat.
