Timpani from 50 Oranges
This is part of Monkey Music, a seven-part suite loosely based on the exploits of the King of the Monkeys as described in the Chinese novel "Journey to the West". It is aimed at a small orchestra such as could be mounted by the faculty staff of a medium-sized music school (with one or two of their brighter students as well). As for difficulty, none of the instruments are pushed to their limits, either in speed or range; but you will get a lot of practice in rhythms.
Most of the pieces are metamorphoses, i.e. they transform an initial theme into an unexpected disguise by various means. This was Monkey's main game, when he wasn't too busy boasting about it.
