This setting of Jubilate Deo is a masterpiece of double-choir polyphony, using the choirs singly except for certain passages and of course the finale, 8 bars of which are repeated. This is one of Gabrieli's rhythmically more complex pieces, in a style which his pupil Hassler was quick to adopt, with cross rhythms and syncopations in rapid movement. The cleffing is unusual - TrSMT:ATTB. The top voice would almost surely have been instrumental but is accessible to modern (female) sopranos. Ideal performances will combine voices and suitable instruments, and a part for Cornett or Violin is provided, but there is no reason why mixed choirs should not tackle the work a cappella or with continuo organ.
