There is a lyrical beauty in the two verses of this poem. I set the poem to music on 20 Sertember for Bass Voice and Piano and have printed it off.The melody is strictly diatonic in G minor moving to C minor for the second verse and return to G minor at the end but with a Picardy Third. B natural.  My wife suggested the accompaniment should resemble a tolling bell. This I have done with a series of very low chords, mainly dissonant. The range goes up to E flat (for the nightingale bits), so the singer might have to be bass-baritone.
