Swan Lake (Russian, Лебеди́ное о́зеро, Lebedínoye ózero) is one of the most famous and acclaimed ballets of the 19th century, set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It was first performed at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow on February 20, 1877, choreographed by Julius Wenzel Reisinger. The plot of the ballet, modeled on various Russian and German folk tales, takes place in Germany and tells the sad love story between Prince Siegfred and the beautiful Princess Odette, who was transformed into a swan by an evil spell by the wicked sorcerer Rothbart. The first of Tchaikovsky's three ballets, it was composed between 1875 and 1876. It is performed in four acts and four scenes. While there are many different versions of the ballet, most ballet companies base their productions, both choreographically and musically, on the revival of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the Imperial Ballet, which premiered on 15 January 1895 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia. On the occasion of this revival, Tchaikovsky's music was revisited by the Kapellmeister of the Imperial Theaters, Riccardo Drigo.
