The sentry, only half awake, staring into the dark, remembers a piece of music by J S Bach, "that most dearest Prelude of my delight". The clouds lift and the stars "show nobly in clear light". Gurney wonders how it will be when he returns home and plays the Prelude: will he feel like a sentry again?
