This is a commissioned piece written for the great Japanese shakuhachi Master, Yoshikazu Iwamoto, who gave the first performance, accompanied by chamber strings of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, at the British Embassy in Tokyo in 1999. The young players had great fun with the 'snap' pizzicato technique in the hocketing sections! The theme is an ancient Japanese folk melody, the title of which translates as 'Lullaby of Shimabara'.
