The author of the text, Father Ranald Rankin, was parish priest of Moidart, on the shore of Loch Shiel near Fort William, from 1834-55. He became familiar with the Hebridean waulking songs sung by tweed workers, and borrowed aspects of this tradition to produce his Gaelic poem "Taladh Ar Slanuighear", the Lullaby of the Saviour. He bequeathed it to the world as "a memento for the children of Moidart". It became part of the folk music tradition, and has been sung to differing versions of the tune he intended for it. The full text of the poem runs to 29 verses. This arrangement attempts to preserve the simple beauty of the unusual melody.
