Variations for Cello and Orchestra was written in 2001 for Norman Jones, ex-principal cello with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Originally for Cello and Piano, I recently orchestrated it for chamber orchestra.

The opening theme, Chanson Triste, is based on a miniature I wrote for cello and piano. In this opening movement all the main themes are laid out which will be developed further in the following variations. Variation 1 - Breaks away from triple time and shows the more virtuosic side of the cello. Variation 2 - A languid, jazzy final movement which recalls the opening. The plodding ostinato bass and syncopated strings contrast with the slightly agitated cello line that almost clings to the repeated Es near the end.
