Purple Melody (SATB) is a pretty, sentimental song, in a purple mood. It starts simply, with a very open sound that builds to an emotional peak featuring a soprano/alto duet on top of a solid tenor/bari foundation. This is the first movement of Three-Note Suite in Three Colors. Each movement is built on a three-note ascending pattern, describing a different mood and color. This piece can be played alone, with or without the introduction and the other movements, which are Red Rhythm and Yellow Jazz. Other sax quartets by this composer: Minor Disturbance, That Lazy Day and What Might Have Been. For a taste of what Paul Abbott can do with a Big Band, check out All Over the Place and The Dancing Plumber.
