Bb Clarinet part from The 12 Days of Christmas Presents (choir & wind quintet)

6 minutes
Classical music

The 12 Days of Christmas Presents is a light-hearted look at what might have happened if a dozen dead composers were given the opportunity to present a musical gift based on one of the 12 days.

Their submissions sometimes play on the number; for example, "2 turtle doves" becomes a duet by Telemann.

At other times, the composer plays with the traditional gift; for example "3 French hens" becomes a French dance for ladies by Offenbach (think hen party …).

Others are musical portraits of the gift itself as in Saint-Saen's The Swan (Carnival of the Animals) for “7 swans a-swimming”.

Although most of the choral parts are unison, the work requires considerable practice because of the numerous tempo changes but is well worth the effort and is a winner with audiences. A recorded accompaniment is available for rehearsal purposes.

This work can be performed by: - Choir and wind quintet - Choir and piano - Wind quintet alone - Piano solo (see piano section)

If performing by instrumentalists alone, see the suggestions in the full score for helping the audience follow what is going on.

A separate wind score is available in the wind quintet section.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
