An original setting of the African-American Spiritual "Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho", arranged for recorder quartet and dedicated to the Walthamstow Hall Recorder Consort. Although jazz recorders are perhaps a little unusual, this setting provides the players with the opportunity to enjoy making a more modern sound, with syncopations and plenty of drama. The song concerns the biblical story of Joshua besieging the city of Jericho, ordering his army to march right up to it, sounding their trumpets, drums and ram horns, and shouting at the tops of their voices, at which point the city walls fall down miraculously and the city is taken, with much gleeful rejoicing by the victors. Although rather a grim tale, if seen more analytically (e.g. from the point of view of the city inhabitants), this setting for recorders clearly expresses each of these parts of the story. To be played with a good dose of bravura!
