I have arranged these delightful traditional Irish Airs, which are very tuneful and great fun to play for my young prot�g�es whose ages range from 5 to 9 years, and are studying the violin with me. They can be used for either class or individual tuition and I have paid special attention to several aspects of technique for learning purposes, for example key signatures � one sharp, one flat, two sharps, two flats and so on up to and including three sharps and flats. This helps the young beginner in key recognition � the first rule of sight-reading. Then dynamics are very carefully thought out and the teacher should try and achieve these in performance. In the last movement of this work it is intentional that I have terraced the dynamics � teacher please explain. I have kept position changes to a minimum, but I encourage my students from an early age to use the 4th finger as this strengths the weakest finger and achieves a very good left hand position. The whole lower range of the violin is exploited across the range of the four open strings. Last but by no means least are repeats which sometimes include first and second time bars and these should - unlike ABRSM examinations - be adhered to. I have also added bowings and fingerings where appropriate, and there are a few elementary double-stops but the teacher can decide if these apply and can change them if necessary. Finally these pieces can be used in many different ways; school concerts, own choice pieces at music festivals, sight reading tests and so on and all the movements can be played attacca which gives the flavour of a real �Irish Party� and the way �Irish Fiddlers� do it, and if you feel in the mood for a good old �sing along� get the parents involved at a school concert by issuing them with song sheets or even have the school choir joining in.
