These 12 minuets were composed for orchestra in December 1789 when Mozart had moved to Vienna (in 1787) and was appointed Royal and Imperial Chamber Composer to Emperor Joseph 11. His main duty was to compose dances for the Redoutensaien of the Imperial Palace where the Imperial balls took place every Sunday during the carnival season (December to March). All the dances composed for these occasions were printed, usually for keyboard, and sold to the public and the revenue proved rather useful in solving Mozart's financial problems as they proved to be very popular. Whilst most people are very unlikely to dance to this music now, the minuets are ideal to play at wedding receptions and other occasions when music is required.
