The Bird of Paradise Suite is a suite of three movements. Mvt No.2 is based on songs of the ’Birds of Paradise’ from Papua New Guinea. Birds of Paradise are unique to Papua New Guinea, and I hope to have captured some of their strange idiosyncracies in this little arrangement!

This melody was sung to me in my office whilst I was serving as DOM of the Police Band, and is a traditional melody from Hula Village, Central Province, PNG.

The tempo of the arrangement should be relaxed and not rushed, creating a gentle bed of sound for the Flute & Oboe to weave their contrapuntal lines over.

The marimba can be replaced by an Xylophone or Vibraphone if wished.
