See note to first piece in this set. 3. Jig: There is nothing sophisticated about this piece. It is a rustic peasant dance, remininscent of a scene by Breugel perhaps? It is the most technically demanding of the four pieces, both for the band and for the listener. The triplet rhythm is insistent throughout and should be taken at a good pace to create an impression of energy and exuberance. However, the phrasing is eccentric and the musicians are necer quite sure what key they are in, thereby creating a complicated, dissonant, anarchic gallop in which the cornets predominate.
