The music tells the story from a chapter in "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame. The Rat and Mole go in search of the baby otter who has gone missing. They are drawn into the presence of Pan, the God of Nature, at whose feet they find the otter. The animals are completely in awe but the God grants forgetfulness and the Rat goes to sleep with the sound of the panpipes in his mind.

The panpipes play a prominent role but a conventional flute may be substituted. The harp part is also important but may be technically very difficult. Glissandi may be played if easier or use 2 instruments (or piano for 4 hands).
