Handel was commissioned to write the music for the Fireworks Music to celebrate the successful conclusion to the Peace of Aix la Chapelle in October 1748. The music, which was publicly rehearsed in Vauxhall Gardens and the first performance some days later met with sensational success, and the music, soon became one of Handels most popular works. As the music was to be performed in the open air Handel scored it for a military type band (trumpets, horns, oboes and bassoons) but added string parts on the occasions when it was performed in Concert Halls. In the original score Expression marks were not added.
