Schubert achieved in the domain of song, masterpieces of insuperable value and absolutely mature beauty. The miracle of �Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel and �the Earl King� composed whilst he was in his teens are amazing monuments to his genius. The celebrated song Ave Maria (Hymne an die Jungfrau) (Hymn to the Virgin) so impressed the Hungarian Pianist and Composer Franz Liszt that he made a piano transcription of it in 1837.
