Peace and Majesty was originally written for Christmas Eve to be sung by a choir with two soloists.
There is a wondrous and atmospheric opening with two soloists singing a lullaby to the new born Jesus.
The choir (Soprano 1 and 2, plus Alto) carry the sound forward in the chorus section giving warmth and conviction to the opening message.
The second verse involves imitative voice parts sung in the style of a canon as the story is continued from the shepherd's perspective, before returning to the chorus once again.
The third section introduces new melodic and harmonic material as the angels feature in the central point of the piece, then gently leading back into the final chorus. The lullaby concludes with the two soloists interacting in turn with the choir and ending in two part harmony on the final phrase.
The lyrics tell the story of the wonder of Jesus' birth as the salvation of mankind with reference to the manger, the shepherds and the angels. The words and music point to the traditional and central message of Jesus' birth at the heart of Christmas.
