The Light of God is a series of variations for soprano and string quartet composed in 2016. It is based on a prayer with the same title, usually attributed to James Dillet-Freeman. The piece seeks to give hope in the darkest hours, as it reminds the soul that any struggle or suffering are not eternal, and that human beings always have the choice to be free and truly happy inside, regardless of the outer circumstances. This prayer has many different versions. The one chosen for this piece of music has a very special personal meaning for the composer, since it has been widely used in his family whenever hope seemed to vanish from life. The musical structure was designed based on that version’s form.

The main theme corresponds to the poem’s first verse, and it attempts to illustrate the inner light that brightens the soul when it turns to the Divine. Verses 2 to 5 correspond with variations 1 to 4. Each variation has a specific meaning: that the essence of that inner light is, fundamentally, love; that this essence is related with a power that exceeds any person’s imagination, and that transcends any other existing power; that that light is like a candle, the glow of which allows to read a book that is written in the language of the spirit, and that is full of wisdom, the kind of knowledge from where life in this world is born; and that this light, this love, this power, and this wisdom are always present, even if the soul is too distressed to feel them. This leads to the conclusion of the piece, where the spirit realizes that it is never alone. Even in the darkest hours, there’s always a glimmer of hope within every soul, and it can be used to cast the darkness away. After all, the shadows need to be absolute to fully obscure a space, whereas light only needs a tiny sparkle to illuminate it.
