Belle Journee was originally conceived as a wedding processional as the section titles indicate, but may be performed in a traditional concert setting as well. On playback via computer, some sections may max out the polyphony of some soundcards and, thus, instrumentation will be inadvertently reduced.

Section notes:

"Prelude" is an exposition section which introduces several themes.

"Offering" mimics the music that usually accompanies the passing of the plate in protestant worship services.

"Maids" accompanies the bridesmaids procession.

"Entrance" marks the entrance of the bride to the sanctuary.

"Bride" is the walk of the bride.

Surrounding some of the sections is development material which I felt was necessary for the cohesion of the piece. Clearly, the piece is too lengthy to be practical to accompany an actual wedding procession. However, by simply removing two sections, one in front of "Bride" and another just after "Bride", and applying some minor adjustments, the piece can adhere to most any actual procession. The scoring submitted here represents something more suited to a concert performance. Scoring is for full orchestra, handbell choir, women's choir, and solo soprano. The lyrics for the bride's walk were inspired by my brother's wedding and read: "Solemn and Sacred. A day of no sorrow or hatred. Our lives join mindful of those we cherish and hold in the aura of love." This choral passage is scored/available in either English or Latin. All other choral lyrics are in latin throughout the piece.

Additionally, I am currently working to re-purpose the sections of the piece to represent/mimic the birth/growth/life of a child as a component of my Masters final project at SMU; the piece will retain its original title in this re-purposed version.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:


seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.


Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.
