DIETRICH BUXTEHUDE (c. 1637-1707)
It is alleged that J.S.Bach walked 200 miles to hear the great Danish organist Buxtehude play, and there can be no doubt that the master exerted a great influence on him. The direct relationship of his music to Bach�s is evident in a D minor Passacaglia whose theme was borrowed by Bach in his great C Minor Passacaglia for organ. Buxtehude�s compositions include a number of Claviersuiten , sonatas for strings, a large quantity of organ music, many cantatas for solo voices and chorale�s.
