The music begins with the strings playing an imitative theme, over which the solo cello performs a haunting melody that is repeated, each time increasing in texture. After a short solo theme performed by the solo cello the strings enter with a section of suspended chords. The middle section utilises and augments the second main theme in a canon-like fashion, over which the original first main theme is heard in the solo cello. This leads to a recapitulation of the first section. The piece ends with a short codetta. ’Invocation’ is a haunting, spiritual piece of music that investigates the ambiguous nature of tonality.
