JOHN GOSS (1800-1880)

Born in Fareham on the 27th of December 1800 John Goss was a church musician who succeeded his teacher Attwood as organist of St. Pauls Cathedral in 1838. In 1856 he was appointed one of the composers of the Royal Chapel and composed some well known anthems, services, chants, glees, songs, orchestral works, hymns and carols. His best-known hymn Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven and the beautiful carol See Amid the Winter Snow are established favourites among congregations throughout the land.

If We Believe That Jesus Died is one of Gosss better-known anthems and is closely associated with the act of Remembrance. The text is taken from 1 Thessalonians 4: 14, 18.
