This composition is inspired by the legends of ancient Greece and Rome, and consists of three movements. The fast-slow-fast pattern of the movements marks it out as being an Italian Overture. It is composed for a string quartet as this combination of instruments is extremely versatile, and allows for a vast range of mood and expression. Each of the three movements conjures up a different scene in the listeners imagination.

- The simple rhythm and harmony of the opening are reminiscent of war drums, the kind played by members of the Roman legion.

- The second section is based around a group of beautiful but deadly sirens luring a group of sailors to a rocky outcropping with their beautiful song.

- The fast tempo, unusual rhythm and minor key prevalent in the third section suggest the trouble kept in Pandora's Box.

Happy listening!
