The quasi-cadenza in the middle of the piece is to be taken at a very free tempo and dynamic. The performer is encouraged to bring his or her own sense of reverie – of dream – to this section. A notable feature of Reverie is the use of unusual timbre for flute near the end of the piece. The flute is purposefully written in a low range; the performer should seek to achieve a quiet, otherworldly effect. This piece should be considered impressionistic.
