This theme and variations is based on the ancient Irish melody Coolin’, Lady of the Desert. It dates from well before 1700. The main theme is a grade 2-1/2, but the variations are solid grade 4’s, especially in the 3/8 variations.
The arrangement consists of a 3/4 melody with 4 variations, each of which alternates between 3/8 and 3/4. Lots of textural changes with melody shared throughout the ensemble.
