Born in Reno, NV 1933, raised in Swannanoa NC -school in Asheville. Studied French horn, Guitar. Attended Chapel Hill as music major 1952-54. Served in Us Army 1954-56, Boston University M.B. magnum cum laude. Theory, Composition 1958 with Hugo Norden, Gardner Read. French horn with John Coffee. A.M, 1960 in Musicology with Karl Garenger, African Studies minor with J.McCall. Assistant Prof. Music, Chairman, Music Dept Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, PA., 1961- 65. Electronic music compositions with early EM studio. Tulane University, 1965-1968-Built Electronic music studio with Paul Epstein. Ph.d (Musicology) in 1970 with Robert Preston, Peter Hansen, Gilbert Chase and J. Smithers. Wrote one of first dissertations on Electronic music. 1968-1998 Prof. of History and Composition School of Music , East carolina University. 1998-present, Prof. Emeritus (retired) .
