Rainer Stegmann was born near to Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, Germany. In his youth he had experiences in Rock and Jazz as well as in classical music, but at the age of 19 he began studying classical guitar at the University of Music and Dr. Hoch`s Conservatory, both in Frankfurt/Main. The participation in master classes of the Assad-Duo and Manuel Barrueco had great influence on him.

During his studies Rainer Stegmann started his concert career as soloist and chamber musician - especially with flute, violin, piano and string quartet - and with orchestras.

He is particularly interested in the music of the 20th and 21st century. Since many years he is very busy in studying and performing the music of contemporary composers like Leo Brouwer, Toru Takemitsu, Benjamin Britten and Hans Werner Henze among others. In his concerts Rainer Stegmann shows successfully that contemporary music is not only for experts.

Rainer Stegmann has performed numerous rarely heard contemporary chamber music and solo works for guitar. Renowned composers, e.g. Ulrich Schultheiss, Daniel Oliver Moser, Tomasz Skweres and Steven Heelein have dedicated works to him. His CDs 'Soundscapes I, II and III' released by the classical label GENUIN received excellent reviews and established Rainer Stegmann as a globally respected interpreter of contemporary music.

Since his youth, Rainer Stegmann has also been active compositionally. His teacher at the Frankfurt University of Music was Prof. Jürgen Blume. Afterwards, he continued his self-taught training, but also in courses, for example with Leo Brouwer. In his compositions, he often mixes different musical styles. He loves the strict classical forms as well as the free, quasi- improvisational, contemporary music, rock and jazz. The Suite 'Hommage à Cervantes' (2016) and ´Call? Recall!` (2017), both for guitar solo, ´The Blue Light` and 'After Darkness' (2019) for violin and guitar, as well as ´Summer Night In An Old Town` for guitar and string quartet, among other pieces, were well recieved by the audience.

Rainer Stegmann holds a lectureship for classical guitar at the university of Regensburg, and he is also a teacher for classical guitar at the secondary school of the ´Regensburger Domspatzen`.

In 2016, Rainer Stegmann founded the association UNTERNEHMEN GEGENWART together with other musicians from Regensburg. The aim of the association is to promote contemporary music both in the region and internationally. Rainer Stegmann is currently the 2nd chairman.
