I am from the twin island state of Trinidad and Tobago, a former British colony. As early as I can remember I have always been surrounded by musical sounds. Whether it was the rhythmic pulses of Afro derived music, or the mysterious counterpoint of the tabla excruciating an East Indian rhythm, or the solemnity of the European symphony, music seemed to be everywhere. The reason I compose music is my belief that I can take the melodic and rhythmic motives of my society’s culture and fashion these elements anew so that they resonate and touch the souls of people, in a timeless manner. It is more important to me, to capture the spirit and context of these musical melodic and rhythmic motives through critically analyzing them and then announcing them anew to the world. I compose using European musical forms, spanning from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries. These musical forms will be altered at times to consider the traditional context of the musical culture being presented. I use European musical forms not because of their predominance, but because of they allow greater technical facility to the composer. Europe's binary/ternary paradigms in musical form, have enabled multicultural European music, to become a global voice. Simply put, European musical forms are (in my opinion) the most effective and efficient way in which to present music to the listener. I now offer my works at a comfortable charge to you. My works are first meant to be played and enjoyed, to share with your friends, or just play because you love to play your chosen instrument. As for playing instructions, play everything ‘rhythmically’ whether fast or slow. Articulation is important, but not to the same extent as in European classical forms. But pay attention to it, wrong articulation can compromise the character a musical piece. Please give me your thoughts about what I have composed. Thank you.
