Some Biographics

Since more than twentyfive years I am a freelancing classical, sacred and operatic tenor, not to mention jazz pianist, from Helsingborg in the south of Sweden, nowadays also working as a church musician (organist) in the village of Tyringe. I like to work with friends in different constellations such as violin, vocal and piano (Duo Cantaton!), male trio (Three Church Singers!) or male quartet (The Male Quartet "Nota Bene!"), jazz combo (The Tenor's Tunettes!) as well as the more unusual trumpet quartet and vocal (Trumpetissimo!) or violin, contra bass, trumpet and vocal (Quartetto Fantasico!). As there is not a lot of arrangements around for these combos I had to start arranging almost from the beginning. Some of the results from these efforts can be seen and heard on Glenn Bengtsson's YouTube-channel.

During my time in Secondary School (Gymnasium) in my home town and at the University of Lund I wrote several jazz pieces without ever having the courage to perform them – until nearly 30 (sic!) years later when I started composing again, after an unfortunate incident with a broken vocal chord (sic again!), this time writing sacred songs based on the jazz tunes of my youth as well as quotes from the bible and sacred hymns. Over the years I have also written a number of drinking songs for festive occations.

When I later begun singing with children, first as part of a "musical team" in my son's prescool, then at work in Tyringe with a children's choir, I found it amusing to write children's songs of my own, some of them actually quite well liked by the young singers!

My son recently told me to translate the best of my songs into English to reach a wider audience, which I might do one of these days!

Recent Work

At the moment I am working on, actually re-arranging, a jazz suite for tenor and soprano solo, mixed choir SATB, children's choir and big band, entitled the Inter Valley-Suite, fifteeen jazz pieces, based on the intervalls of the scale, telling the exciting story of the shepherd and his young, daring "teen-sheep", running away at night, when the shepherd and the older sheep has fallen asleep by the warm, cosy fire, only to meet the cunning wolf in sheep's clothing. Well, at least it has a happy ending. An Inter Valley-Suite try out-version, consisting of six pieces can be watched at YouTube.

I am also working on a children's mass for tenor solo and congregation, children's choir and mixed choir SATB and dixieland jazz band with violin, called the Mässa med Mössa! (Mass with a Hat!), where some children for quite different reasons fall out in the very beginning, only to make up and forgive each other again during the communion.

Finally, I am re-arranging a "chamber mass" for tenor solo and congregation and mixed choir SATB with a musical ensemble consisting of violin, contra bass, trumpet and vocal, entitled Ett Ögonblick av Himlen! (A Moment's Glance of Heaven!), based on thoughts of the mystery of the communion. En liten Biografi

Jag är en frilansande klassisk, kyrko- och operatenor, för att inte tala om jazzpianist, från Helsingborg, numer även tjänstgörande som kyrkomusiker i den lilla orten Tyringe. Jag samarbetar gärna med gamla vänner i olika konstellationer, såsom violin, sång och piano (Duo Cantaton!), manstrio (Tre Kyrko-Sångare!) or manskvartett (Herr-Kvartetten "Nota Bene!"), jazz combo (Jazzkapellet "The Tenor's Tunettes!") as well as the more unusual trumpet quartet and vocal (Trumpetissimo!) or violin, contra bass, trumpet and vocal (Quartetto Fantasico!). Eftersom det inte precis kryllar av arrangemang för sådana konstellationer fick jag tämligen omgående börja skriva arrangemang. Under gymnasietiden i Helsingborg och vid universitetet i Lund skrev jag åtskilliga jazz-stycken utan att någonsin våga framföra dem. Detta blev inte av förrän trettio (sic!) år senare, då jag åter började komponera, efter närmare ett års tystnad till följd av en bristning i vänster stämband (sic igen!), denna gång kyrkosånger, dels baserade på alla dessa jazzlåtar från ungdomen, dels på bibeltexter och hymner. Med åren har jag även skrivit dryckesvisor till festliga tillfällen.

När jag senare började sjunga med barn, först som en del av ett "musiklag" på sonens dagis, sedan i tjänsten i Tyringe med barnkör, roade det mig att skriva egna barnvisor. En del av dem roar faktiskt de små sångarna!

Sonen tipsade mig för en tid sedan att översätta några av de bästa sångerna till engelska för att nå en bredare publik. Det gör jag kanske en vacker dag!

Projekt på Gång

För tillfället arbetar jag med att arrangera om en jazzsvit för sopran- och tenorsolo, blandad kör SATB, barnkör och storband. Den heter Inter Valley-Suite och består av femton jazzlåtar, som bygger på skalans intervall, och som berättar den spännande historien om herden och hans unga, våghalsiga "tonårsfår" som rymmer i natten, sedan herden och de äldre fåren har somnat vid den varma, mysiga elden, för att så träffa den förslagne ulven i fårakläder. Nåja, det slutar i alla fall väl. Smakprov ur en test-version av Inter Valley-Suite kan avnjutas på YouTube.

Jag arbetar även med en barnmässa för tenorsolo och församling, barnkör och blandad kör SATB och dixieland band med violin som heter Mässa med Mössa! Några barn blir av olika anledningar osams redan i början, men blir vänner igen och förlåter varandra under nattvarden.

Slutligen omarrangerar jag en "kammarmässa" för tenorsolo och församling, blandad kör SATB och en ensemble bestående av violin, kontrabas, trumpet och sång, betitlad Ett Ögonblick av Himlen!, som bygger på tankar kring nattvardens mysterier.
