Hi,

I am Kajowola Phiri a Malawian Music composer. Just for a minute or 2, Let me take you through on a journey in my Music Composing career.

I have well over 40 choral compositions to my credit.

I took music composing seriously in the 1980s after learning the art of music Reading and writing however before the 80's, I could still compose some tunes. Having been born in a family that valued music so much, I feel music composing is an inborn as well as inherent talent. Before I learnt music reading and writing I could still create songs which I was singing and playing with the accompaniment of my guitar however very few of such compositions could be remembered at the passing of time. It was after I met friends like Willie Soko, Alick Chirwa and Jimmy Kapindu in 1986/1987, who had similar passion for Music Composing that I got the encouragement to forge ahead with music. We made music composing part of us and together we embraced the art of music composing with great enthusiasm.

Lyrics for most of my compositions are in local Malawian Languages Chichewa and Chitumbuka however I have a few compositions in English. currently I have embarked on a translation Project of most of my compositions to English. It is my sincere hope that most of my compositions will be published in due course.

I have won several Music composition Awards: in 1989 I got the first position in the Bible Society of Malawi Music Composition competition under the theme, 'THE WORD OF GOD SWEETER THAN HONEY' with my Composition HA! Nako Nkhunowa' (O How Sweet) in 1990 I got the 2nd position in a Competition organized by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts of Chancellor College, The University of Malawi, with a Composition, 'UKAZUZI NTHA NGUWEMI' and the same year 1990 I got the 2nd Position in a competition by the Bible Society of Malawi with a song, 'AMBUYE WATHU' (Our LORD). In 1991 I got position number 3 in the Chancellor College Department of Fine and Performing arts Music Composition competition with EDZI NJOOPSA (AIDS IS DEADLY) and lastly in 1992 in the Bible Society Music Composition Competition I got the 3rd position with, 'ULEMELERO' (GLORY)

My compositions have been performed by several Malawian choirs such as the Malawi Nyimbo Ensemble which was a grouping of choral Artists across Malawi. The University of Malawi under the Department of the Fine and Performing Arts used to organize this Choir in the late 80's to the early 90's.

Currently most of my Compositions are being performed by our local Church choirs such as The St Columba Church Choir, The Michiru Youth Choir, the Blantyre Joint Choir and the Mpachika Youth Choir all from the City of Blantyre just to mention a few.

Apart from Composing Church choral music, I have composed several Jingles for Organizations such as Population Services International (PSI Malawi) for their Malaria and HIV/Aids Prevention Projects.

Malawi is a country very rich in music and wealthy in cultural diversity boasting of well over 50 notable Local dances and several other minority dances in the excess of 100 derived from the 12 notable tribal groupings. We have seen the rising of great musician and music arranger in the Name of Mte Wambali Mkandawire and great composers such as Mjura Mkandawire, the late Michael Fred Sauka, Father Mlenga, Jimmy Kapindu, Austin Banda, and many other great Malawian Composers. It was Mr. Mjura Mkandawire who inspired me to the art of Music Composing. He is another great and prolific composer with Music very rich in both Melody and harmony backed by poetic Lyrics very deep in meaning. He has been an inspiration not only to me but to a great many budding composers such as Willie Soko, Composer of Lemekeza Yehova and Alick Chirwa composer of Ungakwewekanga Mtima Winu

I am married to Miriam and we have our 11 year old son Chimango who has shown great interest in Music. He has shown that he can walk in his father's footsteps. He is about to release a Gospel Album, "I HAVE A FRIEND" Recorded in our Home Studio.

Currently am compiling all my compositions into a Book. As soon as it is ready I will come back on this page to make an announcement.
