Ben Mansted was born in Sydney in 1967, schooled in Queensland, and then moved to Melbourne where at the Victorian College of the Arts he completed a Degree in Music Performance majoring on trumpet. After graduating in 1988, Ben appeared with the Melbourne, Adelaide, Tasmanian and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, Australian Chamber Orchestra, the English Baroque Sinfonia, and from 1991-1993 was 1st Trumpet in the orchestra of the Phantom on the Opera debut season.
It was early in his career that Ben began to develop a wonderful skill for music arranging, and in 1994 when returning for his honours year he majored in arranging and conducting. Finding there to be a distinct lack of quality brass chamber music, Ben set about firstly producing arrangements for trombone quartet and trombone choir, then adding to the brass quintet and brass ensemble repertoire. In the following years, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Low Brass performed Ben’s arrangements as did the Tasmanian Symphony Brass Ensemble and the Sydney Trombone Quartet.
In 2003, Ben produced new brass ensemble arrangements specifically for the final concert of the inaugural Melbourne International Festival of Brass and in 2004, produced arrangements for Melbourne Chamber Brass to perform at the MIFB. Recently, the Vienna Trombone Quartet have begun recording Ben’s work and performed a number of his arrangements at the 2009 Melbourne International Festival of Brass.
In 2010, the Sydney Symphony Brass has performed some Mansted arrangements as a part of their concert series. Ben has also contributed arrangements for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Sydney, as a part of his role as an arranger of music in the Royal Australian Air Force Band.
