Brillante in D was composed for myself to play at a bursary competition and it is based around a single interval which it between a concert A and a concert D a fourth. It starts off with the left hand of the piano playing a three note ostinato, the introduction is ended by a D major chord. The solo line commences after the piano introduction and it starts with a powerful and pompous cadenza which shows the flexibility of the Baritone as an instrument, there are many contrasting dynamics, then the cadenza concludes with a virtuosic run, which brings in the main theme. The 6/8 motif is then met which a march-like 2/4 passage which tests the performer and also the piano player. These motifs are played in a variety of manners then as the marziale 2/4 passage occurs again, it develops into a semiquaver which concludes with a D major chord, this sets the scene for the slow movement which is still quite spritley due to the instruction of L'istesso Tempo. In this movement the tonal range of the instrument comes into play, where the soloist is required to play Es above 'top Cs' The peice ends with a crash and a bang, a very virtuosic ending which keeps the reoccurring 4th motif.
