Paroxysm is a sextet for flute, clarinet, piano and string trio. The piece was premiered by friends of mine at the Royal Academy of Music in July 2000. There are two sections to this work. The first is very lively and energetic, which contrasts to the slow, expressive and lyrical second section (from figure J). There is a short reprise of the opening material at figure O, although this is only brief, and acts mainly as a cheeky coda to the work as a whole.
