I tried to force Theodor Storm’s "Autumn Song" (Herbstlied) into a jazz melody with syncopated rhythms, and the sonnet "Decay" (Verfall) by Georg Trakl in melodic progressions in A minor for soprano and piano. When the German teacher, Dr. Walter Hackenberg, called on me, I shot up, startled, from my seat, and couldn’t come up with any answer regarding these poems we had commented in class. That was then, in 1963 or 1964, when I was in Senior High School. But I was able to finish this piece right now (30 November 2011), and it is in E minor instead of A minor, and then I could not have used the lyrics of the sonnet "Decay" by Georg Trakl anyhow. And here, Dr. Hackenberg, is my opinion about ths sonnet we saw in class then.
NOTE: The voice can be either Tenor or Baritone.
