This epic and dramatic work has film score qualities, strong melodies, and a rousing percussion section. From its slow and brewing opening, the work takes off in a flurry of heart-pounding excitement, never letting go! Based on three themes, a rhythmic ostinato (m. 7), a lyrical violin theme (m. 15), and a contrasting smooth section (m. 31), the themes present themselves and then disguise themselves within each other, overlapping for the spotlight. Be sure to emphasize dynamics, especially the crescendos and diminuendos. All percussion parts contribute vitally to the piece, so I would recommend using them all. Never lose propulsion in this piece; keep the tempo going at all times!
