WHAT’S UP, STRUT? for big band- What’s Up, Strut is a grade 5-6 piece for big band with optional tuba and vibraphone parts. It’s a “groove” tune based on a shuffle style rhythm. There are two contrasting sections; one a long lyrical blues line and the other a swing style melody. The main elements of the piece are broken up by some contrapuntal lines and a blues pattern which are expanded upon during the work. There is an open solo section where anyone can solo. The tune should sound relaxed and more “behind” than on top of the beat.
