Angles abound! Geometrically sound, Circulation (The Science of Shape) is based entirely on just that – shape! Shape plays an important role in musical composition, so I based each of the piece’s three themes on shape. Further analysis of the waveforms and the leading of the tones can show how each theme is based on a certain shape.

This piece was inspired by a sculpture at the Fredrick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which was a metal cylinder that had water flowing down from the walls, tall enough to walk through. I decided to write a piece based on the circulation of both the cylindrical shape of the sculpture, but also on the circulation, or flow, of water. The piece later developed into a composition devoted to musical shape. The final product is about four minutes long, robust, contemporary, and exhilarating. A winner!
