Op.70e - Birthday Garland: 5 Sudden Light
Song 5 from The Weston Cycle
I was particularly struck by the nature of this text, and wanted to give it a 20th century Romantic English feel, combined with touches of quasi French pentatonic writing; there are hints of Debussy, Finzi, Barber, and Howells in this song. To me it was important that the text spoke easily and without fuss in terms of composition or accompaniment. Bar 51 uses chord vi rather than chord I as at the opening, on the words "have I been here before", adding harmonic confusion to that of the text.
