This little poem by Victor Hugo, dated 1834, has also been set to music by Edouard Lalo ("Souvenir")), Benjamin Godard ("Amour, amour") and also by Alain Jacques. Literal translation (AJ) –in square brackets the text that was added by Widor to Victor Hugo’s original poem:

My arm was clasping your waist frail And supple like a reed; Your breast was quivering like the wing [Like the wing] of a young bird.

For a long time silent, we contemplated The sky where was going out the day. What was happening in our souls? Love, love! [Love, love!]

Like an angel unveiling You were looking at me in my night, With your beautiful starry glance, [Glance] which blinds me; [Ah! your beautiful starry glance Which blinds me.]
